Date: 10th June, 2017
Every year in memory of Allan Reid, colleagues and friends try to complete a sponsored challenge, raising money for the Paget’s Association charity. This year’s event was “Do the Double”, which involved climbing two ‘Munros’ in the one climb; Beinn Narnain (926M) and Beinn Ime (1011M). We try to complete the challenge as close to Allan’s birthday, 12th June, as possible and this year’s was on the above date.
8 brave souls set out from Succoth, Arrochar at 8AM in pretty poor conditions, with low visibility and steady rain. Conditions varied throughout the climb, however, the rain rarely ceased and the wind increased as height was gained. Everyone managed to reach the baellach where basically three paths are available, the two included in this climb and a third to Ben Arthur (The Cobbler). There were four or five brave volunteers working constructing a new section of pathway that leads to both our targets. I cannot praise these guys enough. The conditions at this point were very bad with high wind and heavy rain, yet these guys were working away, amazing!
We commenced along the path towards Beinn Narnain, however, at this point Jamie started to feel unwell and signaled that he doubted he would be able to reach the summit. I volunteered, mainly as I have already climbed these mountains on a couple of occasions in the past, to escort him down the hill, whilst the rest of the party continued to the top. All 6 managed to reach the summit of Beinn Narnain, although conditions were very poor, with visibility down to a couple of yards. At this point they decided that it would be unwise to continue to the second summit, with everyone drenched and conditions not improving and they all commenced the descent.
Jamie and I took our time and returned safely to the car park, where we waited around an hour for the others to join us. Everyone returned to the car park unscathed, which is the most important part. We were all disappointed that we were not able to fully complete the challenge, however, everyone agreed that they will return next year for whatever awaits us then!
