Golf – Trump Turnberry, King Robert the Bruce Course

11th July, 2017

Spent the most wonderful day at Trump Turnberry today, courtesy of John Miller.

Along with John, Tom Burns and Bill Martin, I competed in the ‘Special Launch Event’, on the King Robert the Bruce Course. This was the first event on the newly updated course, which has been created by redesigning the existing ‘Kintyre’ course at Turnberry. Some of the holes have been updated, some new holes have been created and there are  few that remain as they were before the redesign. We have played the course many times before in its’ old guise, however this was the first event held after the update and we really enjoyed the occasion. President Trump is accused of many things and there are always worries that things are changed and not for the better, however, having been suitably sceptical, I came away from today’s event really impressed. The changes that have been made are all for the better and the course has been improved no end. Some of the views from tees now are absolutely spectacular and I think they have achieved their stated aim, which was to close the gap in quality between the Ailsa Course and what has always been regarded as the ‘second’ course. In my opinion the has been achieved and another lovely and challenging course has been created.

The competition was a ‘stableford’ with the best two scores being counted on par 4 and 5 holes and three scores being counted on the par 3’s. The competition follows a tried and tested routine, although on occasions in the past, I felt that the competitions had been allowed to slip and were not as well organised and had lost a little of their class. Today’s event returned all the class and was well run and the attention to detail was excellent.

The course was in excellent condition and the weather, as always when we visit, was super. A lovely blue cloudless sky and only light winds welcomed us.

Unfortunately, on this occasion we were not able to get amongst the winners, despite Tom cracking the whip and keeping us all on our toes. There is always the next event, which after today, I am sure we will all be looking forward to.

An excellent day with the most beautiful of weather to compliment an outstanding golf course.
